Year 4, 5 and 6 - The Hive

Time has flown for The Hive within a busy first half term of spring. We started off with our behaviour boost where we reminded ourselves of self-regulation. To practice this, we played a class game of Deal or No Deal. We were made offers of dojos and had to decide whether to accept or to risk it and continue the game! This really tested our self-regulation and put it into practice.

We began our ‘Romans’ topic and have been looking at the chronology of events that led up to the Roman Empire! It has been interesting to see how they became so powerful and we are beginning to see how their ‘ruling’ shaped some of our world today! We will be continuing to explore this after the half term break.

In science we have begun our learning on all things SPACE! We’ve been learning about the planets and have found out some brilliant facts about each – we’ve even learnt a song to help us remember them! This will also be continuing after the half term break, where we will find out more about geocentric verses heliocentric and day and night!

To link with this, we have written non-chronological reports in English about the discovery of brand-new planets, invented by us, and the habitants within. We got very creative and enjoyed thinking about the worlds that could be.

This also linked closely with our DT topic where we have been creating pop-up books. We are in the process of completing these and are looking forward to next term, where we will make some soft toys to go alongside these for younger children.

Within Maths, the children have been demonstrating some key values and attitudes when exploring fractions. We have learnt how to identify equivalent fractions, add and subtract fractions and calculate fractions of amounts. It has proved to be a challenging area to master, but we are so proud of the determination shown by all pupils.

We have been adding to our French vocabulary with Mrs Grimes, where we have been learning how to identify and say what is in the towns/villages we live in! This isn’t easy and we are proud of how hard we have been working.

In Computing, we have been learning about stop motion animation and have been working step-by-step to create our own ‘stories’. It has been SO much fun and this has opened up some new hobbies for us in clubs and Feel Good Friday.

In PE, we have been demonstrating some brilliant gymnastic skills. Kat has been working with us weekly to help us progress our flexibility and agility. We are really impressed with how far we have come already!

In addition to our usual curriculum delivery, we have had a number of additional, memorable experiences this half term. This includes a trip over to JFC to see a performance of FAME, Matt Goodfellow (an author and poet) visiting to put on a workshop for us and an orienteering afternoon on our school field! We  can’t wait to see what else is in store for the rest of spring term!
