Years 4, 5 and 6 (The Hive)

This half term, our topic has been “Glorious Greeks”, where we have been exploring our big question: “What did we gain from the Greeks?” The children have loved discovering how Ancient Greece has influenced so many parts of our lives today.

In English, we immersed ourselves in Greek myths and let our imaginations run wild by creating our own mythical beasts. The children then wrote fantastic explanation texts to create a fact book for students at Camp Half Blood, linking brilliantly to our class novel, Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. Their creativity and enthusiasm for writing really shone through and the work they have produced is astounding!

In Maths, we have been tackling tricky fractions! From understanding equivalence to adding and subtracting fractions, the children have shown real determination and perseverance when faced with challenges.

In History, we dug deeper into our big question by exploring key dates and building our understanding of chronology. We compared life in Athens and Sparta and discussed how Greek ideas still influence us today. One of the highlights of the term was our exciting film day! The children learned about the first Olympic Games and then used a green screen to create their own brilliant films — they were fantastic!

In Science, we have been exploring forces and investigating how things move. The children learned about Sir Isaac Newton and how his discoveries — including gravity and the laws of motion — still influence science today. Through practical investigations and discussions, we explored how forces act upon objects and how these ideas continue to shape the world around us.

Art has been wonderfully messy, as we created our own Greek pots using clay. The children worked carefully to shape and decorate their designs, inspired by traditional Greek patterns.

In Computing, we have been programming using Micro:bits. The children recognised and applied different coding structures to create animations for specific tasks, and some even went on to design their own short games — very impressive!

What a fantastic half term it has been. The children have shown curiosity, creativity and resilience throughout; we are so proud of all they have achieved so far and can’t wait to see what the next half term brings!
