Years 2 and 3 (Honey Bee Class)

We have had a lot of fun this half term learning about ways in which plastic pollution affects our planet. We have had a real eco-warrior focus that has linked with our English, Art and even our Geography. We have learnt about different continents, oceans, and labelled countries on a map. We then deepened our learning by looking into the equator and why some countries have different climates. We learnt about compasses and maps and applied this to create our own set of instructions using a compass to help our character navigate.

During our English learning, we started by reading a class favourite, ‘Somebody Swallowed Stanley’. We all loved this amazing story and felt inspired to create our own stories about a plastic bag floating through the ocean encountering different sea creatures. After this, some suspicious posters appeared around the school suggesting we turn it into a plastic factory!! We were not happy about this, which led to us writing letters to Mrs Brown explaining how unhappy we were with the situation.

Maths involved a look at length and height. We looked at how we measure length and height and the equipment we use to measure with. We compared MM and CM and even converted between the two of them. We then applied our knowledge into the 4 operations and followed this by learning how perimeter works and how we measure it. We learnt about forces and magnets during our science learning, which we found incredible fun. We particularly enjoyed all the practical elements involving creating non-contact force using magnets. During our DT we have been deepening our sewing skills. This has involved mastering our cross stitch and working on our applique. We found it quite challenging at times but showed lots of resilience. During our computing learning, we have been exploring algorithms using make code. This required us to create a set of instructions that controlled our digital Micro: Bit. RE involved learning about Judaism. We had lots of fun exploring different items and learning about places of worship.

In PE we focused on our gymnastics skills, and we all made incredible progress. We learnt about balances, jumps, and lifts. We used the apparatus to improve our score strength and climbing skills. We also converted these into our jumps, mastering the straddle through and Pike jump. Some of us even began to finish round offs after our cartwheels. Impressive stuff! We also had lots of fun events, including number day! We all dressed up as our favourite numbers and enjoyed celebrating maths with lots of fun activities.
