Reception and Year 1 (Bumble Bee Class)

Summer 2 Review

In Bumble Bee Class, our topic this term has been ‘Wilderness Explorers’. We received our own Wilderness Explorer Handbooks, where we had to earn badges for completing a number of tasks. These tasks were based both on things we’ve learnt this academic year, and things we’ve been learning about this half term (including lots of exciting facts about minibeasts!).

Our key texts this term have been ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’, ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ and ‘Benjamin Zephaniah’s Nature Trail’. We’ve loved acting out and performing these stories through the story basket and using props. We created a class video of ‘The Nature Trail’, exploring the beauty of nature in our school environment. We have revisited all of our topics from this year; acting out Supertato from our  ‘Superheroes’ topic, revisiting some of the places that Gingy visited in our ‘Once Upon a Time’ topic, keeping a weather diary, making a fruit kebab and writing a letter to the king.

Our Science this term has been learning all about summer and animals in our surrounding environment. Edward’s mum, Emma, is a vet, and she came to tell us all about many of the minibeasts and birds that can be seen on our school field. We also got to do some pond dipping and look after some tadpoles!

Tadpoles aren’t the only addition we’ve had to our classroom this term, as we’ve also been observing some very hungry caterpillars as they grow, form chrysalises and emerge into butterflies!

In maths, Year 1 have worked hard to master telling the time to the hour and to the half hour, and learnt all about the different coins and notes we have as part of our money topic. We were able to apply our previous knowledge of counting in 2s, 5s and 10s to count coins. Reception have mastered number bonds to 10, and practised counting in pennies.

We finished this term with our very own ‘mini camp out’. We celebrated our achievements this year, listened to our favourite songs, toasted and ate marshmallows, drank hot chocolate and had a great time with our friends.
