Years 4, 5 and 6 (The Hive)

It has been another busy and exciting half term in Hive Class, full of creativity, new challenges and fantastic learning across the curriculum.

In English, the children became “myth-makers,” writing their own Greek myths with a twist! We met some very unusual heroes along the way — from a 75-year-old lady armed with poisonous knitting needles to a baby wielding a spear, and even a girl with a hypnotising Barbie doll! The creativity and imagination on display have been incredible.

We were lucky to welcome author Troy Jenkinson, who shared his book The Best Mummy Snails in the Whole Wide World. The children loved meeting his African land snail, Thunder, and were inspired to create their own stories, which we shared with Somerby Primary School.

We had a fantastic time celebrating World Book Day, taking part in a Masked Reader Quiz and a fun Guess the Character game. Competition was high during the Harry Potter Blooket quiz! The children also enjoyed outdoor Reading for Pleasure sessions, making the most of the fresh air while getting lost in their books.

In Maths, we’ve been building our understanding of fractions, decimals and percentages, linking them together and applying them in fun and practical ways. We’ve also explored area and perimeter, using our knowledge to solve real-life problems and challenges that really got us thinking.

Our History learning took us back to Ancient Greece, where we explored the fascinating world of Greek gods and goddesses, as well as the beginnings of democracy. The children loved discovering dramatic myths and how the Greeks helped shape the way we think about government today.

In P.E., we’ve been developing precision and focus through archery. The children have enjoyed practising their aim with target shooting, showing great concentration and control as their skills improved each week.

In PSHE, we began preparing for our exciting enterprise project — the Spring Fair. The children designed adverts and created products such as jigsaws and keyrings to sell, developing teamwork and entrepreneurial skills. Year 5 and 6 also took part in an Operation Encompass workshop, learning about healthy and unhealthy relationships in a thoughtful and age-appropriate way.

In Art, we completed our Greek-inspired clay pots. The children worked carefully to shape and decorate their designs, producing some brilliant final pieces influenced by ancient Greek patterns.

It’s been a fantastic half term filled with creativity, teamwork and enthusiasm for learning. The children have impressed us with their imagination, resilience and willingness to try new things, and we are incredibly proud of all they have achieved.
