Reception and Year 1 -Bumble Bee class
Summer 1 Review
In Bumble Bee Class, our topic this term has been ‘Hubble Bubble’. We started the term by visiting a real-life castle! We visited Lincoln Castle, exploring their storytime castle and visiting their dragons, Lucy and Norman! We started with the story of Dennis the Dragon, helping Wizzy Winks the Wizard to make a potion to help Blue the Dragon speak! We got to dress up as kings, queens, lords and ladies and enjoy a medieval banquet. We then walked around the castle walls, learning about the different parts of the castle whilst having a lovely view of the rest of Lincoln. Finally, we were able to try on some knight’s helmets and have a go at being archers.
When we got back to school, we enjoyed writing about our trip and learning more about castles, linking our reading to things that we saw. Our first story book for this half term was ‘There’s a Dragon in Your Book’, by Tom Fletcher. We used the story to predict what might happen, and to write about the dragon. Year 1 then used the format of the interactive story write their very own interactive picture book. They did a wonderful job!
In History we have been learning about Kings and Queens of England, first learning about Queen Elizabeth II, then about King Charles III. We were able to watch King Charles’ coronation and compare to Queen Elizabeth’s coronation. We also imagined what we would do if we were King or Queen for the day!
We then started to look at Knights and Castles, including the story ‘The Knight With the Blazing Bottom.’ We enjoyed creating a story map with actions for this story, including all of the silly undoing of things to help the dragon out! Year 1 then moved on to innovate their own story to help a dragon. Reception learnt the story of ‘The King’s Pants’, and did some amazing writing about the King, including designing and labelling some pants for him!
This half term has also bought the extremely fun and messy Colour Dash! We loved raising money for Leicester Children’s Holidays and getting in a big mess at the same time. We ran around the field through clouds of powder paint.
Our Science this term has been completed through our outdoor learning lessons. We have been learning about plants in our surrounding environment and have drawn and labelled trees and plants. We will be looking at different types of trees and flowers.
In maths, Year 1 have mastered position and direction and fractions. We have experimented with quarter, half and full turns, and given instructions for movement including using left and right. We have also recognised and found halves and quarters of shapes and quantities. Reception have also explored positional language, using the words ‘above’, ‘below’, ‘next to’, ‘on’ and ‘in’. We have also enjoyed exploring numbers up to 20, identifying odds, evens and doubles.
Bumble Bee Class have been enjoying RE lessons, learning about special places, including places that might be special to them, Jewish synagogues and the Christian Church.
We have also loved PE this term, covering tennis skills! We have practised moving in space, controlling a ball, balancing a ball, bouncing a ball and passing a ball.
During forest school, we have been very busy exploring our new mud kitchen, story circle and den building areas. We have investigated plants and leaves using magnifying glasses, made seed bombs, and spotted different parts of plants and trees.
