# Class 1

In Class 1, our topic this term has been ‘Beats & Boogies’. We have had a lot of fun exploring music, creating art to accompany it and movement to represent it.

Our first book was ‘The Whales on the Bus’. We started with a bus journey in our own hall! We queued to board the bus and pay the fare, then enjoyed a journey whilst singing nursery rhymes.

We were inspired by the funny rhymes based on ‘The Wheels on the Bus’, and continued to make our own. We had ‘the foxes on the boxes’, ‘the owls on the towels’ and ‘the lions on the irons’! We practised performing our own rhymes using our voices and actions.

Our main story for this topic was ‘Giraffes Can’t Dance’. We familiarised ourselves with the story by creating a story map and acting it out, then created newspaper reports based on the events. Finally, we explored how to advertise a Jungle Dance, by creating an eye-catching poster and holding our very own Jungle Dance!

In our classroom we were able to explore rhymes with a number of different instruments, including shakers, a xylophone and a rain stick! We have also enjoyed a keyboard in our listening station – it has been a lot of fun to explore the different sounds and tunes we can create with friends.

As our outdoor learning is beginning to become much warmer, we have been able to enjoy several different activities outside. We used our senses on a Spring senses walk, drew around our shadows using chalk, and created beautiful watercolour pictures of something we could see.

In maths, year 1 have been working hard to divide by sharing, and by grouping. We learnt to make sure that all groups are equal so that it can be shared fairly. We have also learnt how to measure length using cubes, and then using a ruler and centimetres. We are exploring weight and mass using balance scales and will soon be investigating capacity too!

EYFS have built their number knowledge up to 10, and are becoming experts in number bonds to 10. Numberblocks has helped us to become secure with our number facts, and BBS Supermovers has helped too!

Thursday afternoons have been dedicated to Debutots with Louise. Louise has shared with a number of stories, that we have joined in with, then retold through music and movement. Debutots has been perfect for our topic this half term and has really helped us to explore stories through music. We have experimented with beat, using shakers, bells and drums, and moved around like various animals. Thank you so much Louise for enriching this topic for us!

This half term has also seen a variety of days, including ‘Twosday’ (22.2.22) to raise money for FOAKS, World Book Day, Red Nose Day and Ukraine Day.
